Brick House

Typology: Residential Terrace

2021-22
Dharatal Architects
Location: Lucknow, India
Area: 2500 sq.ft , Phase: Complete
Involvement: Design Development, Construction Drawings, Client Management, Material Sourcing, Quantification, Site Supervision

This project is a thoughtful extension to a 1930s load-bearing house in Lucknow, characterized by its innovative incorporation of contemporary design elements while respecting the historical construction methods. The terrace apartment, serves dual purposes as a studio apartment and office space, is strategically designed to enhance both functionality and aesthetics.

The house is constructed with red brick jack arches and lime mortar, and serves as the foundation for this modern endeavour. In response to harsh sunlight exposure on the rooftop, passive heating and cooling technologies are seamlessly integrated. The use of exposed red brick jack arches, beyond paying homage to the historical context, plays a crucial role in regulating internal temperatures. This design choice not only ensures thermal comfort but also adds a touch of visual appeal to the structure. Lime mortar surface finishes enable the house to breathe, contributing to a well-ventilated environment.

Strategically placed fenestration patterns and openings cast intriguing shadows throughout the day. This dynamic quality evolves as the sun changes position, adding to the overall charm.

The layout skilfully establishes a distinction between private and family areas while preserving the terrace’s openness, framing picturesque views of the adjacent park. In essence, this project is a harmonious blend of history and modernity, delivering a functional, visually appealing, and environmentally responsive living and working space.

In this project I was the lead architect contributing to the design development, client liaison, structural and vendor coordination, construction detailing, material sourcing and site supervision.
